So, it's the third and final Xmen movie, and I was so totally stoked to see it. I love Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, and, on occasion, I have been know to like Famke Janssen and Patrick Stewart.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The third, and final movie in the saga, focuses largely on the mutant vs. human controversary, escalating it into a full-blown war. Mystique (a shape-shifter) and Scott (cyclops) are taken out early in the movie, diminishing their roles. Instead of saying that James Marsden was starring in the movie they should have noted that it was more like a special appearance, a guest shot. Rogue isn't in very many scenes this time around either, she was a big character in the first two movies. In fact, the whole plot was based around her and Wolverine in the first movie, making her a big part of the climax. She was part of the fight in the first two films, but completely opts out in this one. Besides for a short training session in the danger-room at the start of the film she doesn't do any fighting what-so-ever. There is more emphasis on Bobby (Iceman), her boyfriend, and their friend Kitty Pryde (the girl that can walk through walls). At the beginning of the movie it seems that there are 4 nearly adult students at the school that are being trained to become the new Xmen.
Storm's character is less than prominant as well, as she takes a backseat to Wolverine when it comes to the storyline. Most of her lines and scenes have to do with her anger that the humans have dared to say that there is a 'cure' for their 'disease'.
Mystique is captured at the beginning of movie and toys with humans before being put in a 'consantly movie prison', a semi truck that drives around the country as to avoid break out attepts. This fails because the truck and prison are made of metal, giving Magneto opportunity to break her out, but not before she is shot with the 'cure'. Magneto turns his back on her, igniting her anger and need for revenge. Jean Gray is back from the dead and it turns out that she is not only not the weakling that they would have you believe in the first two movies but the most powerful mutant anyone has ever come in contact with. She kills her love, Scott, and is returned to the school by Storm and Wolverine. Prof. X reveals that she is very powerful but unstable as well. Wolverine tries to prove otherwise, causing her to turn fully into Phoenix, the unstoppable psycho who kills Prof. X later on.
The emphasis on Jean/Phoenix and Wolverine almost turn the movie into a love story, without Scott (Cyclops) there to be a third wheel to their party. In the end Rogue is human, having volluntarily taken the 'cure' and is rid of her life-ruining power. Bobby (Iceman) and Rogue are together, finally able to kiss and be together. Bobby does not dump her for Kitty Pryde like I feared, because he can get to first base with her. Wolverine must kill Jean, who was quite possibly the love of his life, before she does any more damage. Jean/Phoenix does more damage and killing than any other mutant on the movie, making people disinigrate. Since Wolverine's body regenerates at such a fast rate and the metal in his body is indistructable he's then only one that can stop her. Before impaling her in the stomach he tells her he loves her and then stabs her. At the end there are three graves behind the mansion, Scott's, Jean's and Prof. X's. The movie ends with Magneto playing chess by himself in a park, powerless. If you stay after the credits there is a special scene.
There is now a big question out there, is this the last one? Rebecca Romijn hinted that they might do a fourth at the MTV movie awards, even though it has been said that it was only ever supposed to be a trilogy. I don't know how they would do another movie though. Mystique, Magneto and Roque are all powerless and Prof. X, Jean/Phoenix and Cyclops are all dead. Of course with that last surprise scene Prof. X might not be, we never saw Cyclops' body and Jean/Phoenix avoided death before. I may turnout that the 'cure' isn't so permanant after all too. But I think that this was a good ending to the trilogy. The special effect were awesome and the plot was great, wrapping up pretty much everything. So at this point I'm conflicted, I would like there to be more because I like the story, I want it to go on forever. On the other hand, how can there be more with all the characters getting a rather permanant ending. And why mess with a good thing? Ending it now would ensure that people wouldn't get sick of it and that it goes out on a good note. It's recommended.
