What you should be watching is Heroes on NBC. This is an awesome show that shows how ordinary people have become super heroes and how these people use their powers. They aren't ridiculous, but somehow seem realistic. The senator and his little bro (Jess from Gilmore Girls by the way) can fly. The indestructible cheerleader, played by Hayden Panetierre (who I normally hate), the woman with the split personality… and one is a psycho killer (played by Ali Larter, the woman accused of killing her husband in the first Legally Blonde movie), the man who can hear the thoughts of others (does anyone remember Agent Weiss from Alias) and the Japanese guy who can manipulate time (I don't think he's from anything else). They're all heroes or villains… and there will be a world saving in the future.
This has to be my favoritest of days. My two most favorite shows are on this night… and finally on the same network (yeah, I know I used bad grammar, it was done on purpose).
First is Gilmore Girls, it's the seventh season of a show that should've won several Emmys by now, especially for the two leading women. This show has wit and some of the fastest talking on television. There are obscure pop culture references and cleverly veiled punches of the government (if you watched the sixth season there's an episode where Lorelai is 'loaning' Paul Anka (her dog) to Sookie and there are several comments during the interaction about a leash… watch it-or remember it-and you'll see what I mean. If you didn't see it, it's out on DVD folks, along with the first 5 seasons). It's a clever show that doesn't get enough recognition. Did you like the show Roseanne? It was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 90's, it replays on Nick-At-Nite and on the Oxygen Network EVERY DAY! Well, the writers from that show created this show. And even though they're not with the show this year, the writers they left behind have been carrying on the quality. I feel a particular love for the youngest Gilmore girl on this show, Rory (Lorelai, named for her mother and great-grandmother). Rory graduated in 2003, the same year as me, and I feel like I relate to her problems the most. Of course I don't have to really worry what my billionaire boyfriend is doing in London while he's not in New York closing deals and buying internet companies, but with the college thing and life expectation things… I get it, and it comforts me somehow. So this is the seventh, and rumored to be the final season. If you haven't seen the previous 6 season I recommend renting or netflixing them. My real recommendation is to buy them, it's worth it, but kind of expensive. If you don't get the 'obscure pop culture references' made through out the show, don't worry, each season comes with a handy dictionary that explains the more obscure references, the ones that most people don't get. It returns from the winter hiatus 1/23/2007… keep a look out for new episodes
The second show, the one I look forward to all week is Veronica Mars. It reminds me of my all time most favorite show in the universe (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). This show is, somehow, eclipsing it though. At first I felt bad for starting to like it more that Buffy, but since there are several characters that were once big players on Buffy I don't feel bad anymore. Even more than that, Joss Whedon himself (who created Buffy, and one of my favorite writers/directors/show-business-person of all time) guested on an episode in the second season. Charisma Carpenter and Alyson Hannigan have had rather significant roles on the show (they played Cordelia Chase and Willow Rosenberg (respectively) on Buffy. Cordelia was a main character on Buffy for 3 years and one on it's spin-off, Angel, for 4 of it's 5 years. Willow was one of the top 3 characters on Buffy for all 7 years and did guest spots on Angel in seasons 2 and 4.). Did you like Roswell? Because the same guy who created that show also created this one (Rob Thomas… no, not the lead singer turned solo artist). He also wrote for Dawson's Creek, and penned a book call Rat Saw God (which I have yet to read, so don't ask what it's about).
Still Veronica is one of my most loved characters of all time… closely followed by the delicious piece of eye candy named Logan. In fact, I'm not really sure which one I love more (but I would marry Logan, because it's official, I'm in love with a fictional character-and I'm not ashamed to admit it!). Veronica is played by the adorable (and tiny) Kristen Bell. You may have caught her this summer in the horror flick Pulse, she was the lead. The gorgeous Jason Dohring plays the love of my life, Logan Echolls with such a balance between the jackass-ness and the vulnerable neediness that he makes practically the perfect man (at least for me… he's also a bad boy, which makes him all the more alluring for me). There are also many more beloved characters, ones that I adore just as I adored all the secondary characters on Buffy… Wallace [Percy Daggs III], Mac [Tina Majorino], Dick [Ryan Hansen], Weevil [Francis Capra], Keith Mars [Enrico Colantini]… god, even Sheriff Lamb [Michael Muhney]. There are a couple new characters on the show since it's the 'gang' starting college. The mystery of the day will pull you in and even if they're doing the big arc mystery you'll understand it after the second episode [you watch], even if it's not as full as if you were watching from the beginning (and you should be). The one episode mystery though, those are good. They're entertaining and they cause you to use your own thinking cap, solving the crime along with the freshman-sleuth. The chemistry of the characters will suck you in too! The good natured banter and easy relationship between Veronica and her father, Keith, is something to behold. It's a little reminiscent of the friendship-like relationship between Lorelai and Rory on Gilmore Girls, surpassing simple parent-child and into parent-friend/peer/child. The way the two characters interact with each other gives the show a familial spark, a warm touch to see Veronica always has a touch-stone when her life falls apart-which it often does.
Another relationship that Veronica has is with touch-stone number 2, the only other constant in her life, at least in a good way. Wallace, her BFF. The befriended each other when she cut his naked ass down after being duct-taped to the flagpole on the first day of their junior year of high school. Then she proceeded to save him from the wrath of the local biker gang and keep him from being kicked off the basketball team after being framed for drug use… I'd be her best friend too. The camaraderie between them is easy and not at all romantic, he loves her, but in a 'I-love-you-because-your-my-best-friend-and-I-know-you'll-always-be-there-for-me' kind of way. And he is. And she is. If Veronica needs something, he's her first call.
But the chemistry, the relationship that really has me coming back for more is Veronica's relationship with her very own star-crossed love, her friend/ex-friend/enemy/friend-ish person/hero/secret boyfriend/boyfriend/ex-boyfriend/boyfriend/ex-boyfriend/guy she saved from a murder rap/guy that drunkenly declared his love for her and then slept with one of his friends' hot step-mother/hero/boyfriend/ex-boyfriend… yeah, they've been a lot of things to each other, but it's all been kind of good because their chemistry is awesome.
If you haven't been watching this show for the first 2 seasons [and the first 9 episodes of the 3rd] then you should definitely rent them. They're worth it. I suggest tuning into Tuesday nights during the winter hiatus though, to catch up on what you missed of the third season… because it's shaping up to be a good one. It'll be back January 23, 2007… watch for it!
