So this weekend I went to the movie THE LAKE HOUSE. It stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock who, besides starring in countless movies since, you might remember being together once before from a little movie called SPEED. No, it's not a movie with a plot based in the wonders of drugs. This high speed action movie takes place on a bus and the story revolves around the fact that a psycho put a bomb on a bus and rigged it so that it cannot go below 50mph without exploding. Critics, among others, damned the movie, saying it blew and gave it thumbs down. Still it soared in the box office, shooting Bullock to fame and cementing Reeves as an action star.
There are no high speed chases in this one though, and only one brief scene with a bus at the start of the movie. The action was low in this one, and Reeves and Bullock still have that chemistry, even though they spend much of the movie apart. The times of their realities is always based exactly 2 years apart, making it nearly impossible for them to be in one scene together. There are only a couple instances where their lives meet up. The train station, the party and the end. The end nearly kills you with it's heartbreak and the thought that Alex (Reeves) might not get to Kate's (Bullock) note in time, or that maybe he won't even go to the lake house to check the magic mailbox. A magic mailbox? That is not something you hear every day. A mailbox that transports letters 2 years forward and backwards in time, helping the characters share in each other's life altering events.
If your like me, you can solve a good mystery before it ends (except "Veronica Mars" I still haven't guess the right character, but I'm getting better). I knew two things straight off... One, the guy at the beginning was Keanu and the box in the attic were theirs. Most movies are pretty predictable for me, but I know that my mother didn't figure it out, which is little comfort since she tends not the over think things like me. I was expecting this movie to crash and burn (even though I love the actors that play the main characters), because lets face it, the trailers were not that good.
If you're in the market for a movie that takes the initiative to make you think (mostly about the time-space continuem) and makes you dream of your soul mate then this is for you. It's a movie that shows exactly how far the universe and fate will go to help you meet your true love. It's recommended.
